| 26/6/07 | We were watching the birds at the bowl of water on the ground by the front lawn over the weekend. It had just been raining and it was surprising to see with all the water about that they still liked coming to the bowl. A pair of hardy Firetails also had a bath ! We also noticed that a pair of Firetails were different and had a red patch around their eyes. Simpson and Day lists a Red Eared Firetail but they are not shown on the map as being on KI. |
| 5/6/07 | Fri 1/6 Now that we have had over 150mm (6 inches) in the past 6 weeks, every where around the retreat is green and the kangaroos and wallabies are seldom seen just outside the house. The birds haven't deserted us and continue to use the bowl on the ground. Today it was cold and breezy but that didn't stop a pair of Beautiful Firetails from having a bath ! Mon 4/6 evening. Little Penguins heard calling down Orchid Gully near the sea. Tues 5/6 Weeding the vegie garden to the sounds of a frog somewhere close. Another one heard by the dam. |
| 24/4/07 | Fri 20/4 Two wedge tail eagles seen catching the updraft from our cliffs, one carrying what looked like quite a sizable stick. Sat 22/4 Lots of bird bathing activity about 8.30am at the bowl on the ground (which the wallabies and kangaroos like to drink from). About 20 birds visited the bath in the space of about 10mins, Superb Fairy wrens, Beautiful Firetails, 3 different varieties of Honey Eaters: Crested we see often, a first viewing of a New Holland and the third not identified. Saw a bigger bird, also not identified. often the birds will be about not long after sunrise; we hear them but are still in bed! |
| 13/4/07 | Sat 7/4 Our guests did a sunset tour to Lathami Conservation Park.We started with 3 Koalas at our special spot. In the park we saw another Koala up close, an Echidna and 6 Glossy Black Cockatoos (3 pairs). At our Kangaroo viewing spot there were 15, fewer than usual because there is very little grass as yet. Sat14/4 We are still filling our little pond up to 3 times a day and often the kangaroos even lie out the front waiting if it is empty! The birds seem to prefer the little bowl out the front of the house. Yesterday at 8am we had 2 Honey Eaters then Superb Fairy wrens followed by 2 Beautiful Firetails bathing and having a drink all in the space of about 5 mins. This goes on throughout the day at intervals with most visits early or late in the day. There are large numbers of bees and it is interesting to see how the birds, kangaroos and wallabies all cope with them. Kangaroos and wallies shake their heads but when it gets too much for them they hop a few feet away. |
