22/12/06Fri 15/12 Two goannas, one 90 cm long, the other 70cm, seen in the orchard in one day! Our guests also enjoyed watching an Echidna they spotted on a walk near the Retreat as it foraged and dug holes without paying any attention to them.
Sun 17/12 A different goanna 50 cm, seen in the orchard. All the wildlife is hungry, it has not rained since July.
Tues 19/12 The bird bath was in great use today. Lots of Superb Fairy Wrens, male and female, a Beautiful Firetail and a Crescent Honeyeater, easily identified with its distinct black crescent on its white chest. One day a camera will be on hand....
21/11/06Sun 12/11 Our guests are keen bird watchers and soon spotted 2 birds we haven't noticed before: a European Goldfinch and a White Browed Scrub Wren.
Fri 17/11 12noon We were sitting out the front when suddenly a number of noisy Fairy Wrens flew around their nest out the front of the house. Suddenly a kestrel flew in and the wrens scattered.
Shortly out came a goanna from under the nesting bush!
It is really fascinating what you can see in a moment, given time!!
Sun 19/11 6.50pm 2 pairs of dolphins spotted 500m of shore breaking the surface regularly, one fin bigger than the other.
11/11/06We have had a number of interesting sightings this week. A Beautiful Firetail flew across the track as we headed to cricket. A 60 cm goanna entertained the dog (on her lead) at the side of our house.
Our guests enjoyed seeing 2 Little Penguins in burrows on their Pebble beach walking tour. We looked in rockpools to see anemonae, shrimps, crabs of various sizes, little fish, starfish of various shapes. We named a new feature "Ellie's Toe Dip Rockpool" she discovered. (our guest from the UK)
Took our guests to Cape Cassini to do a Bird Survey. We saw 2 Hooded Plovers, 1 Oyster Catcher, 42 Pied Cormorants, 32 Crested Terns, 5 Ruddy Turnstones & others totalling 95 birds in all.
Over the past 10 days,in 6 days of guest touring 14 goannas and 12 echidnas have been spotted.
31/10/06Over the past week we have heard little penguin calls on quite a few nights not far from the house. Quite a walk for them up from the foreshore!
