| 9/7/06 | On Wed 28th an unusual sight,an echidna seen at night,8pm 2 km up our track from the house. It has left lots of diggings. Then on Mon 3rd another echidna seen only 1 km from the house at 4pm. It may be the same one! Just on a little further, a koala seen by the track in a Pt Lincoln mallee. We were having afternoon tea at 4.15 pm out the front when there was great excitement.Pat spotted a whale spouting directly in front of the house about 500m from us. When breaching happened we saw that there were two of them. After watching them through binoculars surface a number of times about every 3 mins or so, we decided from the back fin shape that they were most likely Humpback whales. We went down our Pebble Beach track to the lower cliff top there and watched them swim past, turn and swim back to the West about 200 m out. We watched them for about 45 mins in all. Unfortunately our photos were disappointing but we will never forget the experience!! Sun 9/7 A wedge tail eagle seen this morning in front of the house using the cliff updraft harassed now by magpies who have a nearby nest. |
| 16/6/06 | Whale sighting at Cape Cassini, Sat 27th of May by our neighbour, Roger Teusner heading West and we missed it because we were on the mainland! A pod of dolphins was heading East and met the Whale. Some of the dolphins continued on but quite a number swam back ahead of the Whale jumping out of the water, escorting it much like destroyers around a battleship. Regular sightings of kangaroos, wallabies on our track, also superb fairy wrens and crimson rosellas in the meantime around the house. Tues 12th June Two scarlet robins flitted about, took it in turns to sit on our outdoor furniture. Fri 16th Whilst our guests were having morning tea after arrival, a wedge tail eagle flew along the cliff top heading West and was harassed in turn by two magpies till it climbed up in weak thermals and out of range. |
| 9/4/06 | Thurs 6/4 9.15am 70 cm goanna seen 2km from our house sunning itself on our track. Sat 8/4 8am 5 superb fairy wrens had a wash in the bird bath outside our bedroom window. |
| 25/3/06 | A brief summary of wildlife seen recently, some by guests out walking on the wilderness animal trails: Sat 25/2 1pm: a sea eagle playing in the updrafts from the cliff and 1/2 hour later, 2 wedgetail eagles doing the same. A kestrel chased them off. Goanna 200m from house up the track. Sun 26/2: 5 kangaroos at the back of the house sitting, feeding and drinking from the pond and one seen at the front of the house. Fri 3/3: 5.30 pm goanna seen by termite mound while David was out walking, 1km up track. Wed 8/3: 1pm koala in tree by track 0.7km from house. Thurs 9/3: goanna in orchard. 8.30 pm 8 wallabies feeding on front lawn, the most so far this summer (more feed available this year) Fri 10/3: 8am, 2 kangaroos drinking at pond. Sat 11/3: 7pm, 5 kangaroos drinking at pond followed by 2 robins. Wed 15/3: goanna seen 1.3 km up track, koala still in tree by track, great to see the koala still there, they are often gone within 24hours. Sat 18/3: Echidna seen on Orchid gully walk. |
