| 13/7/05 | On Saturday 9th John Ayliffe and his wife Jenny Clapson came for lunch. John runs the Marine Centre in Kingscote and also does Little Penguin tours from there, too. So in the afternoon we went for a walk to see the peguin burrows along our coast. We would have seen possibly 15 or so with birds sitting on eggs in 4 of them. As we walked along the clifftop we also saw 4 New Zealand fur seals playing just out from the wave cut platform. On Tuesday 12th there was great excitement as Pat came rushing back from her walk after she had seen Glossy Black Cockatoos up the track only 300m or so from the house. I raced up with the camera and managed several photos and made 12 sightings, some repeats and from the sound of birds eating as well was happy to report a flock of about 10 birds had been seen to the Rescue Program Coordinator,Trish Mooney when I took in our Orchid Gully water sample. |
| 3/7/05 | Great excitement this morning. When I went to check the raingauge I looked out to sea and fancied that I saw a spout of water going up. Watched for a few moments longer, and there it was again. I raced inside, grabbed the binoculars, ran up to the balcony and looked out to sea. A whale was frolicking in the water, it is the first whale I have seen, and so exciting. I watched it as it spouted, slapped its tail, dived, what a majestic animal. It gradually disappeared around the coast, but definitely made my day!!! |
| 1/7/05 | The first day of July, the middle of winter, you would think. After 10 months of only marginal rainfall, we have had 154mm in June, followed by a week of the most beautiful balmy weather. The bush looks so good now, everything bright and green. Today we have more weather coming in, but during the balmy week we have prepared the orchard for the Spring/Summer season. We hope that this Summer once again we will be able to have some great food from the orchard. We have been having some trouble with the possums in the orchard, they do love fresh green shoots, especially all the lovely citris leaves!!! |
| 19/5/05 | Even though it has rained and there is a little run off in the dam, the bird bath and fish pond still have lots of animals and birds visiting them. It is wonderful to watch the birds at the bird bath only a few metres from our bedroom window. Several days ago as a guest was looking out the front of the house a Honey Eater flew to the bath followed by a Scarlet Robin and then a Beautiful Firetail. A Beautiful Firetail had also visited one morning recently viewed from our window making it very easy to see its red tail which normally shows as flash of red as it flies. |
