2/2/10Net mending yesterday up a ladder when there was quite a commotion. A big group of our Tammar wallabies, perhaps about 15 in all, were under the sheoaks right where I was, excitedly jumping about. Then a number of them seemed to be having a wrestle and rolling on the ground. Next thing one of them raced off to be persued by a line of wallabies all chasing after it. A short while later they were back with a number of wallies interacting with a whole crowd of interested onlookers. Then they were off again and I went back to net mending. It reminded me of a line of male Echidnas following a female. It is summer which is wallaby breeding season so thats probably what it was all about.
21/1/10Came home from Kingscote this morning and encountered a Koala walking across our track. Not a usual sight, especially where it was as there are no preferred feeding trees nearby. But males go searching for females in the breeding season which is now...
One of our guests while out walking along our cliff tops saw a pair of White Breasted Sea Eagles one sitting on a rock stack, the other flying nearby overhead.
11/12/09We returned from our 3 week trip to Tasmania nearly 2 weeks ago now and the Wildlife Diary needs an update!
Thurs 3/12 A 70cm Goanna at our gate
Sat 5/12 Watched an amazing interaction between a pair of Wedge Tailed Eagles and a White Breasted Sea Eagle. One Wedge Tail stayed aloft but the other one descended to lock talons with the Sea Eagle as they disappeared below the cliff top level.
Tues 8/12 An Echidna (or two !) has made a bit of a mess again we noticed this morning digging up the ground and over turning rocks in front of the house.
Wed 9/12 We enjoyed sitting quietly late afternoon in our greenhouse watching all the animals and birds coming up to drink at our water bowls, 5 kangaroos, 7 wallabies (later after sunset) 4 Crimson Rosellas (looks like Mum & Dad and 2 juveniles) etc
It is really great to enjoy the peace and quiet and the wildlife without lots of others... We enjoyed Tasmania and our bush experiences but always had to share with lots of others!
Sat 12/12 Morning tea and the birds are busy bathing or coming to drink: A Superb Fairy Wren Male( brilliant blue) had several baths, 2 Silver Eyes, a Beautiful Firetail and 2 juvenile Crimson Rosellas in the space of about 10 minutes...
20/10/09Wed 14/10
Walked up the Western boundary fence and located 3 of the original boundary survey markers, spotting a medium size Echidna busily foraging.
Friday 16/10
Spotted a bird sitting on a bush at the cliff top edge from the kitchen window. Quickly set up the telescope in our greenhouse, focussed to 60x and easily identified it as a Nankeen Kestrel from its markings, even though it is a 100 metres away at least.
Sat 17/10
Another Echidna seen , this time about 1.2 km up our track, med/large, brown, some cream quill ends, busily digging holes in the sandy edges of the track.
Monday 19/10
3 Kangaroos out the back of the house in the morning still there in the afternoon.
