| 21/10/08 | Wed 8/10 Guests enjoyed watching a small Echidna with clean cream quills foraging only 20 metres from the house. Fri 17/10 A medium / large Echidna spotted foraging on our track as I went to take part in the Glossy Black Cockatoo Census at Lathami Conservation Park.Just after sunset when the spotting team congregated near roosting trees for the night, it was possible to view 25 of the flock of about 45 of these endangered birds in a small group of trees only about 30 metres from where we were all standing. It made an amazing sight! |
| 28/9/08 | Wed 24/9 A group of 9 students with their lecturer came to see our operation from Charles Sturt University in NSW. On our brief walk to Pebble Beach we checked 9 Little Penguin burrows: 3 inactive, 4 active and 2 had a bird.At the clifftop the group saw 3 dolphins not far out. Thurs 25/9 Two students stayed overnight on our Working Holiday option and their jobs were,in order of their preference: planting 9 Drooping Sheoak seedlings, collecting Native Apricot fruits (small, non edible, little sticky red seeds) for Trees for Life, firewood collection, bushfire clearing and throwing stone off the track(prior to grading). The last 3 tasks 1/2 hour each. On the walk to and from the seed collecting we checked 9 endangered Eutaxia Diffusa plants, a bush pea, all growing well and saw an Eagle in the distance being harassed by a Kestrel which was joined by another Eagle. It is possible that they could have been Sea Eagles judging by the way one of them flew low out over the sea as if fish hunting. |
| 18/9/08 | Mon 15/9 5 Beautiful Firetails at the bird bowl at once, drinking, bathing. Wed 17/9 The wild flowers are starting to put on a show. Various yellow wattles, Narrow Leaf Wax flowers on the track, Gaunt Rice flowers with blue Morning Flag just starting. Thurs 18/9 A 70cm Goanna at our gate as we went over to the orchard. A warm sunny day, about 20 oC |
| 7/9/08 | Walked the Orchid Gully trail on Wed 3/9 to check trail markers before the SA Tourism Award judge came. Noted that there were a few Pink Fairy orchids in flower, lots of Blue Fairy orchids in flower and the Greenhood orchids had gone to seed. Spider orchids and Veined Helmet orchids not yet at flowering stage. Also not many Scotch thistles yet to weed. Sat 6/9 Went out to collect stone pavers on our track and saw the first Goanna for the season, 60cms long 1 km from the house. In the evening there were 5 kangaroos eating grass close to the house. Kangaroos have often been seen close to the house this winter which is unusual as there is plenty to eat else where. |
