7/8/08Some special things in the last week or so:
Wed 30/7 late afternoon. While walking up the track, our dog drew my attention to a medium sized Echidna foraging a few metres off in the bush.
Sun 3/8 We watched a majestic White Bellied Sea Eagle soar gently up on a thermal in front of the cliffs as we had morning tea in the conservatory.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, I thought I heard the sound of a cat mewing outside.
Tues 5/8, late afternoon. Cat trap set under a bush in front of the house.
Wed 6/8, late afternoon. First chance to check the trap (teaching all day) A big black and grey patterned spitting monster gave the trap a workout on approaching.
Thurs 7/8 am Cat to vet to be put down, weight 5.4 kg. Wedge Tail Eagle seen flying up from near our track on driving by, only metres away, on the way in pm.
22/7/08Over the last week it has been cool and windy but the little birds around the retreat are hardy little souls and have been regularly seen having their bird baths out the front ! Male and female Red Breasted robins (the male is the more brightly coloured) one day, Beautiful Firetails the next and several others possibly Scrub wrens and Honey Eaters on other days (only a quick glance)
The possums have been back in our orchard again on several nights (they have never done that in winter before) so we put apple in the traps and caught 2 last night which Pat released near Parndana today.Hopefully they don't come back....Kangaroos are still around the house most days, too. Went to the front door Saturday morning to check the rain gauge to find two only meters from the house, so went to the conservatory door and there were two on the lawn drinking from the rain water bowl.So I went out later.
Tonight I have just put out two specially programmed tape recorders to record at set times to see if we have any Whip Birds in the vicinity of the Retreat for a University research program.
23/6/08At last the possums have had something to eat outside the orchard for a good three weeks now and haven't been in. On a sunny day we had two snakes in the orchard which scurried out of sight quickly in our orchard shed. The next day, also sunny, I had a good look at a 50cm light brown snake and it has to be our first sighting of a Copperhead.
Monday 9/6 Its windy and we have the familiar sight of 2 Wedgetail eagles soaring up above our cliffs to the west on updraughts but also two others doing the same thing in the distance over cliffs further west.
Monday 16/6 The Channel 9 Postcards team have been to stay and we take them on a Coastal Wildlife Tour. Geoff the camera man films an Echidna some distance away across a gully but the wallabies and kangaroos are nowhere to be seen. A check of our Little Penguin burrows finds someone home in two out of seven burrows.
Friday 20/6 A Wedge tail eagle flies from a roosting tree over our track as I drive past at about 8 am on the way to Parndana.
Monday 23/6 My first close up view of two European Goldfinches coming down to our ground bowl for a bath. Easily identified with their red faces and pretty appearance.
22/5/08We are still putting the kikuyu grass out the front for the animals, mainly kangaroos,to eat. The lawn now has some tinges of green after recent rain so the wallabies are there to eat the new shoots. It is unusual to see the wildlife around the house every day at this time of the year.Wedgetail Eagles have been seen regularly overhead as the windy weather was producing cliff updraughts. The mice and possums continue to eat our seedlings in the vegie garden. Its a tough life growing any thing there at the moment. Pat is ready to toss in the towel! Respite when growth really starts after the rains in perhaps a weeks time !
