This is a photo taken this year of a Koala regularly seen near our track on the way in to Cape Cassini Wilderness Retreat, about 800 metres from the house. It is reported that over 1 million wildlife animals were destroyed in the devastating fires last summer on Kangaroo Island. Drone research using heat seeking camera techniques indicate that 40,000 Koalas died with perhaps 8,000 now being the surviving population number on the Island. ( Information from The Islander this month.) The silver lining in this is that numbers of Koalas in recent years had exploded and Nature has intervened to avert a population catastrophe for the time being.
